Captain’s Log, November 4th, 2007
Wow! What a mess
these fires made of our beautiful city. It was less than a month ago I was
driving up through Cuyamaca and looking out at the damage done by the Cedar
fires that are still very visible today. It’s saddening. The good news is how
well the city pulled together to help those in need. While the SDAPA was mildly
inconvenienced by canceling league play for the remainder of the week, that’s
nothing compared to what many, many San Diego families are enduring as I write
and you read this Captain’s Log. One of our very own SDAPA members, Alona
Hernandez, was one of those unlucky people. She and her husband and 4 kids lost
their home and the contents inside in the Ramona fire this past week. Alona has
been playing in the SDAPA in Poway since 1997. Our hearts go out to their family
and the many other families who have lost their homes in this devastating
disaster.
We have made
adjustments to the schedules for all
Monday-Thursday divisions to reflect the changes that needed to be made due to
the fires. We just caught a new mistake for Wednesday and Thursday divisions
that shows the wrong week being skipped for Thanksgiving. This mistake happened
because of the changes made to the schedule last week.
We encourage
every team and league member to go to the web site
whenever there is a natural disaster that affects league play. Obviously, if
your family is in harm’s way, SDAPA should be the furthest thing from your
mind. We will update the home page and the message
board for information pertaining to league play. We prefer to stay off the
phone lines so we don’t interfere in any way with emergency services.
The lost week
that was last week is just that. When an entire division has their matches
cancelled, we do not require the entire division to make up matches. We just
push the cancelled week to the following week, slide every other week back one
and drop the last week off the schedule entirely.
The annual
Halloween Ghoul Tournament was last weekend. It looks like the fires hurt the
turnout a bit with only 46 participants competing, but fun was had by all that
attended. Paul Langley took first place in the 9 Ball event and pocketed $320
for his outstanding efforts. Congratulations also to Robert “Jabs” Jabinal
for his 2nd place finish. Jabs won $160. Finishing in a tie for 3rd
place was Karina Mena and Esther Jaquez. They each won $80. In the costume
contest, Tina Pawloski ran away with the first place prize with her Gumby
costume. Finishing in 2nd place was Robert “Jabs” Jabinal for his
pirate costume. 3rd place went to Esther Jaquez for her Little Red
Riding Hood costume. Each of the prize winners received cash and prizes. The
prizes were purchased at Billiards
Direct in La Mesa. There were many great costumes and we thank those of you
who dressed up for the occasion! Pictures
from the event are posted on the web site.
We are now in
the final month of qualifying for the Spring Single’s
Regional. Paul and Jamie Langley and Kurt Manley have scheduled several
qualifying weekends at the Hungry Stick for players still looking to qualify in
8 Ball or 9 Ball. Dates have
been announced on the message board of our web site at sdapa.com. To be
eligible to compete, you must be currently active on a team in the format you
wish to compete in, and have at least 10 matches played in that format.
Pool
Tables Plus is announcing their grand opening at the Otay Ranch Mall, at
2015 Birch Rd in Eastlake. Dave Pearson,
one of the top exhibition pool players in the world will be at the store on
November 16-17. Dave’s “Ginger Wizard Collection” will be on sale for a
limited time. The phone number at this store is 619-482-0314. Come and check out
their grand opening.
There are only 4
weeks of play left in the Fall Session for Wednesday and Thursday divisions.
This is the last week to add players to your roster. We do not allow players to
be added to teams when there are less than 4 weeks of play left in the session.
If you are adding new players to your roster this week, they must pay their
membership fees before they play.
We will be
sending out the annual Turkey Shoot flyer with next week’s Captain’s Log. If
you are stuck at home during the Thanksgiving break, we invite you to come and
participate in the SDAPA 8 Ball Turkey Shoot. See the flyer for details!
