Captain’s Log, September 30th, 2007
The US Amateur
Regionals were held at Jolt’n
Joe’s in La Mesa this past weekend. 52 Players from Arizona and Southern
California competed in this
prestigious event for the opportunity to advance to the US
Amateur National Championships in Atlanta, GA November 2-4. We qualified 4
players total, 2 women and 2 men. On the ladies board, Norma Vestey from
Carlsbad edged out Joy Nelson (La Crescenta) 9-7 in the finals to advance to
Nationals. In the other ladies final, Geri Peterson (Idyllwild) squeaked out a
9-8 win against Trinh Lu (Riverside) to join Norma in advancing to Nationals. On
the men’s side of things, Bruce Hawley (San Diego) stayed on the winner’s
side of his double elimination bracket all the way through and defeated John
Troy (Escondido) 11-3. In the other final match, Abe Lim (Foothill Ranch)
defeated Paul Langley (San Diego) 11-6. The US Amateur event is played like the
Masters league we run locally, with a combination of 8 ball and 9 Ball. The US
Amateur National event will feature some of the best amateurs in the country.
Our best wishes to each player advancing, especially our SDAPA members Norma and
Bruce.
This is the 4th
week of play for Sunday and Monday divisions. All members must be paid up in
membership fees this week to stay on the roster. Players can still be added to
teams after the 4th week, but membership fees must be paid before
they play. When a player is removed from the roster, their team stats are
removed from their player record. These records will not be reinstated. It is up
to each team to make sure the membership fees for each member are paid up by the
end of week 4. It is also very important to make sure you turn in your score
sheets on time if players owe membership dues.
I’m
typing this up before the Blast takes
place, and most of you will not receive this until the Blast is actually
finished, but we will list the teams that qualified for City Championships on
our web site a few days after the completion of the event. 16 teams will qualify
for City Championships in both of the 8 Ball and 9 Ball formats.
The Fall
Single’s Regional tournament will take place at Tap Daddy’s in Hemet, CA on
October 6-7. Registration begins at 8am on the 6th and the player’s
meeting starts at 9am. You should have received your paperwork in the mail for
this event if you qualified on an 8 Ball Single’s Board between January 1st
and June 15th of this year. Give us a call if you have not received
this information.
If you didn’t
get qualified during the first qualifying window, it’s not too late. There is
a huge qualifier weekend scheduled at the Hungry Stick on October 13th.
Check the SDAPA web site message
board for details. If you are already qualified for the 9 Ball Regionals in
March and haven’t qualified in 8 Ball yet, this would be a great time to try
to get qualified in both. The qualifying window is open until November 30th,
so time is running out.
At the end of
the month is our annual Halloween Ghoul tournament. We will be sending a flyer
out in the next week or two, so keep an eye out for that. The Halloween Ghoul
tournament is a 9 Ball single’s tournament open to SDAPA members actively
participating in the league and with a minimum of 7 lifetime matches played.
Eligibility requirements will be posted on the flyer.
I know
that the term “Captain’s Log” makes it sound like this weekly newsletter
is meant for Captain’s eyes only, but that is not the case. It is important
that all of our SDAPA members stay in touch with everything we have to offer.
Please share all of this information with all of your teammates. What may not
interest you may interest one of your teammates. Thanks!
Players can
switch from one team to another within the same division during a session, but
they must have approval from the team captain of the team they are leaving. It
also must be cleared with the league office prior to playing a match with the
new team.
Congratulations
to Laurie Rayner and Doug Hoff on their recent nuptials. They got married in
Vegas directly following the 9 Ball Southwest Challenge. Laurie and Doug are
both SDAPA members. We wish you many, many happy years together!
