Captain’s Log, September 9th, 2007
Sunday and
Monday Divisions: Welcome to the Fall Session. This session will close out just
before the Christmas break. Teams may still be adding or dropping, so don’t
print off schedules for your teammates too quickly. Weekly fees are $40.00 per
team. We do accept checks and money orders made out to APA. Teams are welcome to
pay their entire session’s fees up front if they so desire. Score sheets for
teams using the mail system must postmark their return envelopes no later than
the day following the league match. Bonus points are awarded each week for
timely submission of score sheets and league dues, so it’s important not to
fall behind in submitting your paperwork.
Roster changes
can be made right on the score sheets. New members have until week 4 to submit
their membership fees. Membership fees are $20 for each new member. Players that
join after August 15th will get a pro-rated renewal when they renew
their membership the following year if it’s renewed prior to March 1st.
The 8 and 9 Ball
Blasts are scheduled for the weekend of September 29-30 at the Hungry Stick.
Schedules will be posted to the web site soon. If your team does not have
internet access, contact the league office
for your first round match schedule. Teams that won the Summer
Session division standings in divisions with 6 or more teams and teams that
won the session ending Blast are all scheduled to participate in this event.
Each team will receive $800.00 prior to the start of the event. We will have
trophies and plaques for the Summer Session available for distribution during
the Blast. MVP’s, Perfect Session winners and anyone who earned a patch during
the Summer Session can come by and pick up their awards anytime during the
Blast. Any member of your team can pick up these items.
The Blast
tournament is the first round of the Local Team Championships. We will qualify
16 teams in each format for the City Championships in June.
We have 37 San
Diego teams signed up for the 9 Ball
Southwest Challenge. Your rooms are reserved for Thursday, September 13,
Friday and Saturday nights. The tournament starts Friday morning, September 14th
and should finish Saturday night.
The
US Amateur Regional is taking place at Jolt’n
Joe’s in La Mesa on September 22-23. Players from all over the Southwest
will be competing in this prestigious event. The US Amateur is one of the
biggest amateur events around and is organized by the APA. Winners of the
Regional event will compete in the National event in Atlanta, GA November 2-4.
Applications
have been provided in your team packet for all new members to fill out. New
players are required to fill these out before they play. Submit them back to the
league office in the supplied envelope along with your score sheet and fees.
Veteran teams
are encouraged to help the new teams out. The definition of helping out would be
to briefly explain how the match gets started, how
to keep score properly (including marking
defensive shots), fill out the fees section of the score sheet, add and drop
players, etc….
We send out a newsletter
with the score sheets just about every week. It’s important to read and share
this information with your teammates. We sometimes discuss important league
information in here and you never know when I might discuss something important,
so it’s important to read every one of them. We also post these to the web
site.
There is a
section on the score sheet to fill out a sportsmanship
grade for your opponent. Those grades range from 1-5 depending on how well
your opponents behave on league night. Good sportsmanship is just as much if not
more important than good competition on the pool table. A 5 is a perfect score,
a 4 is above average, a 3 is average, a 2 is below average and a 1 is horrible.
If you are submitting a grade of 1 or 2, a letter or email should accompany your
grade to explain why this team received such a poor grade. We want nothing more
than for each of our league members to have a positive league experience on each
of their nights of play, and we want to know about it when someone or some team
ruins that for our league members. We thank you for helping us out with this
still fairly new program.
Congratulations
to Ben and Jennifer Witty on the birth of Aubriella Danny-Elle on September 4th,
their baby girl who weighed in at 7 lbs. 5 ozs and 19 inches in length. This
girl was born to play pool. Not only are Ben and Jennifer both SDAPA members,
but proud Grandpa Alan and Uncle Tony are SDAPA members as well.
