Captain’s Log, April 6th, 2008

The 13th Annual APA 8 Ball Southwest Challenge concluded last weekend.  San Gabriel Valley came home with their first SWC Championship after defeating a Las Vegas team in the final match. The top finishing San Diego team was Andy Friedman, Julie Wisch and Herbert DeLong with a 5th place finish. A total of 18 San Diego teams cashed in the tournament! The 9 Ball SWC is slated for September, so if you missed out on the 8 Ball event, there is another one coming up later in the year.

The WPBA will be at Viejas Casino this week. Wednesday kicks off the festivities with the very popular Pro-Am event. WPBA player Melissa “The Dragon Lady” Herndon was at the Southwest Challenge doing challenge matches and signing autographs while promoting the San Diego event. The tournament itself will take place Thursday through Sunday and includes afternoon and evening rounds. You can buy individual tickets for afternoon or evening rounds or buy tickets for the entire event at the Viejas gift shop or through Ticketmaster. Hope to see you there.

We’ve bumped back the start of the Triple Play Masters League to April 19th. I never should have scheduled it the week following our return from the Southwest Challenge. We still have a few teams getting organized and I wasn’t ready to get it started on April 5th. But, it looks like we will have a very solid division with lots of really good teams from all over the county. It’s not too late to put a team in. Grab 3 or 4 friends and form a team. Triple Play is a Saturday afternoon league that will play basically every other Saturday. I will be on hand at the Irons Tournament on April 12th to recruit Masters teams and help find teams for people who are interested in playing but don’t currently have a team to play on.

The Iron’s Tournament is this coming weekend at Players Sports Bar on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Doors open and entry fees will be collected starting at 9:30am. Don’t be late! The entry fee to enter this event is $10 prior to the day of the tournament and $15 on the day of. All the details for this event can be found in the tournament forum of the SDAPA web site message board. It should be a great day to compete in a 9 Ball tournament and reflect on the good times so many of us shared with our dear friend Dave Irons.

Time sure flies when you’re having fun. The Spring Session is quickly coming to a close. The Players Monday night in-house division is down to 3 weeks of play left for the Spring Session and cannot add players to the roster at this time. All other divisions have 4 weeks left. This is the last week any team can add players to their rosters (as long as you don’t have a bye scheduled). Of course, qualified teams are not allowed to add players to their roster. The Spring Session is the last session to get qualified for the 2008 City Championships. In the coming weeks, we will discuss the playoff formats and Blast tournaments, so keep an eye out for this information.

It is important to note that a player must have a minimum of 4 matches with the team during the Spring Session and a minimum of 10 matches in the format they are competing in to be eligible for City Championships.
