Captain’s Log, March 30th, 2008
Tuesday Division
score sheets were mailed out without being processed for the previous week. The
league office was closed during the Southwest Challenge, so we were not able to
score the Tuesday divisions before we left. We plan on updating the Tuesday
division stats on Monday night. However, please use the skill levels as they are
reflected on the score sheet for your Tuesday night matches. Wednesday and
Thursday divisions should not be affected by the Southwest Challenge, so expect
updates to be made at the normal times.
We are still
taking registrations for the new Triple
Play Masters Division starting up in a week. Masters is a non-handicapped
format that features a combination of 8 Ball and 9 Ball. Teams consist of 3-5
players with 3 people playing in a match. The Masters Division is a Saturday
afternoon travel division that starts at 5pm. The schedule is set up to skip
several Saturdays for those people who don’t want to commit to playing every
Saturday. The relaxed schedule makes it a fun and competitive format. The
Masters League pays back to all teams based on finish. There is no limit on
skill level for the 3 players competing in a match, and each individual match is
a race to 7 games. Each win is a point for your team, so every game is
important. To reach 7 wins in a match, participants will play 5 games of 8 Ball
and 8 games of 9 Ball. This format requires that you make the 9 ball to win
rather than the point system APA uses for the regular 9 Ball leagues. Weekly
fees are $30.00 per team. Everyone that has played in this format has really
enjoyed it. We have teams signed up, but we’d like to get more teams involved.
Most teams consist of players that are rated skill level 5 or higher. Contact
the league office to find out more about this format.
A Message From Coach- There will be a an Artistic Pool
Shootout (APS) Tournament on April 18th that is designed to promote
trick shots and so much more, while helping players learn cue ball control and
special playing techniques. All in attendance benefit by this magnetic and
exciting style of tournament play with unique shots and a player, fan, and room
friendly competitive format…for a special moment in billiard history! For your
information APS is under APPA (Artistic Pool Players Association) operated by Tom
"Dr. Cue Rossman. Although Tom will not be there, Coach will be the
Tournament Director for this event. It consists of 8 trick shots that you will
be required to shoot and are posted at Gamers
Universe . It takes place on Friday the 18th of April. Players meeting will
be at 7:00 pm and it starts at 8:00 pm. It should take about 3 hours to
complete. It is for all ages and all skill levels. Entrance fee is $10.00 with a
$2.00 green fee. There will be drawings for prizes for all entrants as well.
Minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 entrants only. It will be at Gamers Universe,
5269 Linda Vista Rd., San Diego, Ca. 92110, 619-543-0800. Take Morena Blvd. to
Linda Vista Rd. and turn east. Pass first light (Napa St.) and look on right
side about 100 yards past. The 8 shots are posted or contact Coach at my e-mail
address jbarcoach@cox.net and I
will send them to you. It is a great way to find out how to get started shooting
trick shots at the lower level and possibly be able to move up to the next
higher level. I will be there every Friday between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm to help
with the shots or answer questions.
The WPBA
(Women’s Professional Billiard Association) is coming to Viejas
Casino, April 9-13. It
kicks off with a Pro-Am tournament on Wednesday followed up with a tournament
featuring the best women pool players in the world. Not only are these
ladies the best in the world, but they bring an incredible level of
sportsmanship and class to the sport of pocket billiards. Each year, we send out
a request for volunteers for this event and this year is no different. If you
are an advanced skill level player and have some free time available and would
like to help these ladies keep the tournament running smoothly, they would very
much appreciate your help. Contact Brian
at the SDAPA league office to volunteer. There will be more info on this event
in next week’s Captain’s Log.
Heidi Lucas is
organizing and taking sign ups for the First Annual Irons Tournament, in memory
of former SDAPA member Dave Irons. Come on out to participate in the tournament
or to help us remember the man many of us knew quite fondly. The tournament will
be held on April 12th at Players Sports Bar on Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
Registration for the event starts at 9:30am and the entry fee is $10.00 if paid
in advance and $15.00 on the day of the event. Please see the SDAPA
web site message board for all the details on what should be a really fun
tournament.
