Captain’s Log, February 24th, 2008

Congratulations to Melissa Fares and John “LJ” Pasquarella for winning the Bonnie and Clyde St. Valentine’s Day Shootout last weekend. 1st place paid $560. Finishing in 2nd place was Hillary Yamashita and John Stroble, pocketing $440 for their efforts. Tying for 3rd place and winning $320 was Raquel McCluskey and Kurt Manley and Vicky Corpuz and Steve Matthews. We had a full field of 64 teams and a total purse of $3240 that paid out to 24 teams. Congratulations to all the teams that won money. It was a fun tournament. Thanks to everyone for helping make it a fun tournament and thanks to the Hungry Stick for providing the tables for this event.

This coming weekend is the 8 Ball and 9 Ball Spring Regional Tournament at the Hungry Stick. Dave Whitsell will be on hand for cue repair all weekend. If you qualified on a Single’s Board between January of 2007 and December of 2007 and you have not received your entry packet from the APA, contact the SDAPA league office to make sure you are qualified to compete. It’s going to be a long weekend as we have more than 180 players competing for 12 spots for the National Championships. I may be calling a few of you to play a Friday night match to help lighten the load for the weekend matches, but I will only be calling you and your opponent if you live within a reasonable drive to the Hungry Stick. Besides the huge San Diego turnout we will have this weekend, we will also be competing with Riverside APA, Tucson APA and Phoenix APA.

We’ve been noticing lately that some teams and/or divisions in the SDAPA are not awarding sportsmanship points the proper way. Here is the grading scale that should be used for giving your opponent a sportsmanship grade each week:

5 Stars: This is the highest grade. A 5 should only be awarded if your opponents displayed outstanding sportsmanship. If you had an extremely good night and the other team went out of their way to make the night fun, or they did something above and beyond what is expected, you should award them a 5.

4 Stars: A 4 should be awarded if your team had a very good night, the other team was fun to play against and there were no problems whatsoever.

3 Stars: This is an average grade. If your team had a generally good night although there were some minor issues that were resolved in a relatively congenial manner, you should award the other team a 3.

2 Stars: This is a poor grade. If your team did not have much fun because the other team continually displayed poor sportsmanship and was unwilling to resolve any issues in a friendly manner or at all, but there were no threats made or any violent behavior, you should award the other team a 2. A written note must accompany a grade of 2.

1 Star: This is the lowest grade. A 1 should only be awarded if the other team was so verbally abusive, threatening or violent or if they were cheating or arguing so much that it made your night practically unbearable. A written note must accompany a grade of 1.
